An Intro to Wedding Blogs..or Weddlogs...Whatever..

Hi!

So the lovely moms mentioned that we should create a blog to give our guests an easy place to find info about the wedding.  I'm learning that when the moms ask, it's better to just give them what they want.
Being tech-slow and typo-prone, I tried to pawn this off on a couple other people to no avail...if you can forgive the basic-ness of the blog and lack of flashy interesting dohickeys, we will happily ply you with all the wedding/Asheville information you need.  Feel free to comment with questions and we'll get back to you ASAPish!

Ceremony Details and 'Stuff' PRETTY PLEASE READ THIS ONE!!

On top of the Pyramid of the Moon in Teotihuacan, MX.
Anne doesn't really remember having 'dreams' of her wedding day...but when she started planning, it became apparent her wedding style is 'relaxed backyard'.  December in Asheville isn't really backyard weather, BUT as long as it is not raining, the ceremony will be in the outdoor courtyard of Ben's Tune Up (like them on FB to get a feel for the goodness).
We are hoping for either 60 degrees and blue skies or 30 degrees and light snow; both of which are possible in December in our beautiful mountain rainforest! We'll promise to keep the ceremony short and sweet, to have quilts and fires to keep you warm, and put a warm drink in your hand ASAP, but please consider bringing a warm coat (or you know, a fur) and sensible shoes (or fuzzy Uggs/slippers) for the ceremony, and your fancy dancing shoes for later!
The rest of the celebration will be indoors at Ben's with plenty of food, drinks, and dancing to keep you toasty.

Wondering if there was some familial cringing at putting "Ben's Tune Up" on the invites?
You bet! But that is part of wedding planning fun, right?

Also, Chris and I are still working out the details of our wedding registry.  As we've got a couple more years of nomadic student living ahead of us and do not have many materials needs, it would mean the world to us if you felt obliged to contribute to a home-buying-settling-in-for-least-four-years-of-residency-in-one-spot-nest egg. We can provide more details about that as the wedding nears.

Excited to celebrate with you all!

Places to Lay Your Weary Head and Fill Your Fridge

Lodging: While we were able to block some rooms for the wedding, because Asheville has become a year-round holiday spot, blocking elsewhere was difficult.

PLEASE RESERVE A ROOM/HOUSE/APARTMENT EARLY!

Rooms are blocked for the Gority/Irvine Wedding at:
The Hampton Inn on Tunnel Road (<2 miles from downtown)
The Holiday Inn on Tunnel Road (<2 miles from downtown)

**these reservations must be made by the 3rd week in November for the discounts to apply.

Other hotels in the downtown area are:
Aloft (about 3 blocks walking from Ben's)
The Renaissance (Marriott)

My personal preference for staying uniquely, comfy, and affordably in town:

Oddities of WNC and Basic Amenities:
Oddities:  While beer and wine are sold in grocery stores, all liquor is sold in state run ABC stores located around town.  Also, no alcohol is sold (in grocery stores or restaurants) before 12 noon on Sundays, and ABC stores are closed on Sundays.

Grocery stores:
For those of you traveling in clans: Sam's Club
For those of you who are hippies at heart: Earthfare, Whole Foods/Green Life
For those of you who want it all:  Harris Teeter, Ingles, Trader Joe's

Activities

So before you dive into the next few posts, we'd like to let you know a few things.

1.  We are planning a couple 'Meet Ups' for the Friday and Saturday before the Wedding.  If you're in town a bit early, we'd love for you to join us!

Friday the 27th: Come meet us for beers in the name of love!  We'll pick a couple of the downtown breweries that are all within walking distance of one another and taste some yummy, local brews.  For those of you who don't enjoy beer, the breweries also have sodas, ciders, and full bar options.

Saturday the 28th:  One of Anne's FAVORITE ways to spend an evening with a big group is on Asheville's Big Purple Bus!  Her friends, Jim and Jen, run LaZoom comedy tours, and they have a special Holiday tour lined up just for us.  Please let us know if you'll be joining us as space is limited to 40 people.   (details: cost is $18/person, it has PG-13 type humor, departs from one of two downtown locations for a 90 minute tour)

2.  Here's a sample of 'Anne's Perfect Day in Asheville' so you have a good idea of how to combine all the interesting/delicious/superduper fun things in the following posts.

Early workout at CrossFit Asheville (sub: Yoga at the Asheville Yoga Center)
Breakfast at Over Easy Café (don't be put off by the wait…the biscuits are worth it)
A walk down Lexington Ave to do a little shopping
Sensibilities for a facial (man sub:  MEN GO TO SPAS, TOO! Just do it!)
Lunch at 12 Bones BBQ (sub:  Salsa's if you want to stay downtown)
Nap (sub: a walk through the Folk Art Center and hike along Chunn's Cove or the parkway,
or in town: walk to Battery Park Books and Champagne to read a bit)
A beer and some good conversation at the Wicked Weed
A movie at the Fine Arts Theater
A liquid truffle or pot de crème at the French Broad Chocolate Lounge
ZZZzzzzz (sub: dance party at Ben's Tune Up if it's a Saturday Night)

Things, Things, and More Things To Do

In GDL at the Luchas!

We'd really love for you to get out and see the town, experience its charm and meet its endearing weirdos, so do a little research before arriving to have an idea of what you'd like to see and do.  If your imagination isn't working well, never fear, because it wasn't really by chance that Asheville has been voted Beer City USA for the past 3 years.
In addition to your surfing on Trip Advisor, feel free to consider:

For The Sporty:
Hiking: Large Sections of the Blue Ridge Parkway close during wintertime limiting the number of hiking spots you can get to, but it does mean you can walk/bike anywhere on it without worrying about traffic.
Out in Brevard (about a 30 min drive south of town and get-away-town-of-choice for Steve Martin), two of my all time favorites stay accessible year round:
John's Rock & Looking Glass Rock.
Locally, along the Parkway you can usually still access hiking around the Folk Art Center—one trail has lovely views as you hike the ridge around Chunn's Cove. Also, closer to downtown, take Town Mountain Road up to where it meets the parkway to find the trailhead for Rattlesnake Lodge.

Yoga: The Asheville Yoga Center offers a wide variety of classes everyday, and Anne's dear friend Jakub Holy teaches some amazing classes there.  Other great studios peppered around town include:  One Center Yoga (Iyengar), Lighten Up Yoga (variety of styles).

CF: CrossFit Asheville is located in West Asheville and is hands down one of the greatest gym communities on the planet (double blinded, case controlled scientific fact). Check out their web page for more info on drop-in visits and holiday schedules.

Spas: (I'm a firm believer in Spas = Sports, and reservations are recommended)
The Spa at the Grove Park Inn is a lovely all day affair
Shoji Spa is a Japanese style spa tucked into the mountains where you can lounge in hot tubs in the snow, drink some green tea, and get a massage with your sweetie.
Sensibilities is one of the oldest and BEST day spas downtown.  Facials and massages here are amazing.

The Sunday Drivers:
Black Mountain is a sweet little town 15 miles north of Asheville with loads of little shops, great coffee, and delicious chocolate.
Hot Springs is about an hour drive through the mountains that has a great little 'spa' where the tubs are filled directly with water from the Springs.  It's best visited in the evening with some friends and a bottle of bubbly.
A winding drive out towards Weaverville that cuts back up Ox Creek to Town Mountain road is beautiful and fun if you've upgraded your rental car.

The Refined:
The Biltmore Estate and Biltmore Village are a great way to spend an entire day.
Galleries:
Downtown is stuffed with Galleries  Blue Spiral is a perennial favorite
River Arts District is a neighborhood of old buildings just West of Downtown filled with artist work-spaces and galleries

The Kidlets:
Pack Square Park
Carrier Park
The Grove Park Inn's Gingerbread House Exhibit is up 'til just after the New Year

The Shoppy:  My favorites are found all along Lexington Avenue, Wall Street, Haywood Street, and the Grove Arcade.
For the Ladies: Tops for Shoes, Minx Boutique on Lexington, and Makeup in the Grove Arcade.
For the Gents:  Old North State on Merrimon Ave.
RAD: Art Walks are Scheduled year round, though our holiday time may not follow the normal schedule.

The Musically Inclined and Curious:
The Grey Eagle:  Yo Mama's Big Fat Booty Band is playing 12/31
The Orange Peel Railroad Earth will be playing 12/29

Only in Asheville: LaZoom Bus Tours

For a Happy Belly

I was going to write a little bio on all these places, then I realized it'd take way to long.  Instead, I've listed them from places I have to eat at on a visit home to places I am always happy to eat at when at home.  Beyond these, there are TONS of great choices, and most are kid-accommodating...just want to share my bests.

Breakfast/Brunch:
have to:
Over Easy Cafe & Sunny Point (in a dead tie for best biscuits and jam..it's good that weekends include two breakfasts)
Sunday Brunch: Limones
happy to:

Lunch:
have to:
12 Bones BBQ* & Salsa's (tie they're absolute opposite ends of the lunch spectrum--the most amazing BBQ and corn pudding or a mishmash of Caribbean tastiness)

Casual Lunch/Dinner:
have to:
All Soul's Pizza** (their GF polenta crust is delicious, so is the kale caesar)
happy to:
Wicked WeedWasabi Sushi, Heiwa Shokudo Sushi, Sunny Point, Clingman Cafe*, White Duck Taco Truck, Lucky Otter Burritos (for when you're margarita drinking to win), Chai Pani, Laughing Seed

Places for Coffee, Tea, Cocktails, Wine, and Chocolate

Chris says, "Eat All the Chocolate!"
Coffee/Tea:

Izzy's  always has a pack of crusty gutter punk kids smoking in front of the coffee shop..don't let them keep you from some of the best espresso in town
Bomba has a beautiful location and staff, no crusty kids there

Dobra Tea House is lovely and relaxing

Cocktails/Wine: it's hard to go wrong most places downtown, but these are some of my favorites

Zambra my long time favorite for delicious drinks (and tapas if you're hungry), they're an asheville classic
Sazerac interesting cocktails, nice small plates, and lots of mirrors
Walnut Street Wine Bar  great place to try a glass of something new and watch people walk by
The Southern easy, relaxing, good

Dessert: I'm only giving you one option because it is so good you HAVE to go

Places to Drink Beer

Beer, Beer, and more Beer:

I could spend days writing about the 20+ breweries in Beer City USA, but thankfully these guys super simplified the process. One stop beer-heaven-searching:   www.ashevillealetrail.com

Here are my 5 favorite breweries--all have incredible beer + a little something extra--and the best taste-all-the-beers-tasting room:

1.  All around champs for deliciousness, Asheville flair, and proximity to Norfolk Southern Tracks:  The Wedge Brewery
2.  Delicious, convenient, and with cheese plates and ambiance:  Wicked Weed Brewery
3.  Next door to the wedding venue and the best salty kettle corn I've ever tasted:  High Wire Brewery
4.  The best of the long-time brewers in the area with a sweet tour and tasting room: PisgahBrewing Co.
5.  Tucked away on a side street, free pretzels and hot spicy mustard, and always packed with ornery locals:  Dirty Jack's (GreenMan Brewery's Tasting room)

Tasting Room:  The Thirsty Monk—upstairs is all American craft brews, downstairs is all Belgian imports.
